The major issue with any probiotic is the highly acidic nature of the stomach that anything taken by mouth has to survive. Hydrochloric acid secreted by the lining of the stomach means that the environment is very acidic (pH 2.0 – the same a battery acid) and very few beneficial bacteria can survive this extreme environment. Thus the type found in ‘yoghurt probiotic’ preparations e.g. Yakult are quickly denatured and few get into the gut to help promote a healthy microbiome.
