A report by the World Innovation Summit for Health’s (WISH) Dementia Forum has revealed that major drug companies are pulling back from the search for a dementia cure following ‘repeated and costly failures’ to come up with a breakthrough medication.

The authors state that between 1998 and 2012 there were no less than 101 unsuccessful attempts at developing a drug to treat Alzheimer’s, with only three drugs gaining approval for treating symptoms of the disease.

The report, presented to a major gathering of health experts in Doha, Qatar, also showed that drug companies halved the number of research programmes into central nervous system disorders, which include dementia.

With no known cure and the number of people living with dementia worldwide set to reach 135 million by 2050, costing the US alone an estimated $1trn (£652bn), the WISH report says that dementia will ‘move from a major health challenge to a global economic crisis’.

Dr Matthew Norton, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: ‘The report shines a necessary spotlight on some of the challenges facing dementia research today. Among those challenges is a perception that – following a number of failed clinical trials for dementia – major pharmaceutical companies are finding it challenging to invest in this area, fearing that diseases like Alzheimer’s are too tough to crack.’
